I'm sure by now that the situation in Nashville has hit the national news. We had major storms in middle Tennessee and parts of Nashville and surrounding areas are flooded. The Cumerland River circuit winds straight through Nashville, with lots of smaller rivers and creeks branching off through the entire region, which are all said to be 4 to 10 feet above flood level.
My first impressions of the storm were mild, as the creek in our back yard overflowed and water reached the corner of the house, but it's happened before. It wasn't until the news reports of more severe flooding in other parts of the city started coming in that I began to understand the gravity of the situation.
It's shocking to see photos of the beautiful Opryland hotel under 10 feet of water, to think of muddy water and classic works of literature floating between the bookshelves of the Opry Mills Barnes & Noble where I worked off and on for 9 years, a place as familiar to me as my own home. The gorgeous and historical 'Music Row' of downtown Nashville is also flooded, as well as numerous neighborhoods in suburbs all around the city.
Nashville is a wonderful city and community built on faith and old fashioned values and I know the people here will persevere. If it is within your means, please donate to the Nashville Red Cross to help them better serve flood survivors.
My family and I have been more fortunate than others. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been displaced from their homes and places of work.
